Bicycle People
When I immigrated from Johannesburg to Chicago, I wouldn't have felt as at home if it hadn't been for bicycles. People often find togetherness through music and art; bicycles did the same for me. These simple machines connect places: cities or the wilderness open up beyond what is bipedally possible. People living on opposite sides of the world—who may never meet—share and find solidarity in this sub-culture. For me, Africa and North America were joined. Johannesburg and Chicago connected because of this simple mechanical workhorse.
